Let’s rewind back time. When you were in school what motivated you to top your exams? A brand new phone, the latest gadget out in the market, a fine dining experience..? Give us the deets! For students of a Punjab government school, it’s all about travel. So, in order to entice students to study hard and make it to the board’s merit list, the principal promised merit students free air travel. Yes, we aren’t kidding!
Punjab Govt School Principal Promises Free Air Tickets To Merit Students
Rakesh Sharma, the principal of Shaheed Gurdas Ram Memorial Government Senior Secondary School (Girls) had an interesting idea to motivate his students to top their 10th and 12th boards. According to the principal, it’s been 12 years since students of classes 10th and 12th made it to the merit list of the Punjab Education Board exams. So, in order to fuel the fire in them to excel, the principal asked students to list their wishes and promised to fulfil them.
Their wish? They said in unison,”jahaaz da jhoota” (to travel by air). Done! Said the principal who promised to fulfil the wishes of meritorious students by giving free air tickets to any Indian destination of their choice. According to a Times Of India report, the principal held a prayer meeting to ensure the students of his promise to fund the air tickets from his own pocket. As most of the students belonged to lower-middle-class and middle-class families they never experienced air travel. So, this remained their life-long dream.
Merit Students From This School Flew To Goa & Delhi For Free
Eventually, 4 students from the school, two from class 10th, and two from class 12th made it to the board exam merit list. In November 2022, the principal ensured the two students from the 12th flew from Amritsar to Goa and attend the India International Innovation and Invention Expo (INEX-2022). He will also fund the Amristar-Delhi air tickets of the two students who topped class 10, in the last week of January. The students will get to visit Red Fort, Rashtrapati Bhavan and other iconic places in Delhi.
The principal’s generosity and kind-heartedness to fulfil the wishes of meritorious students have motivated 22 students from his school to register themselves for the merit positions this year. And yes, he is ready to fund even 22 air tickets, if it means fulfilling their dreams!
