Spain Held National Sleeping Competition To Promote Naps

The world’s first every sleeping competition was held in Spain in 2010 and it was done to promote naps, which are healthy for one’s metabolism. The European country held its first-ever sleeping competition titled National Siesta Championship in Madrid in 2010. The idea behind this competition was to promote and defend naps that are healthy and good for everyone. Contestants were required to fall deep asleep for a certain period of time and the winner even received a great cash price for the same.

The National Siesta Championship in Madrid, Spain unleashing the sleeping beauties of every contestant who took part in this. It’s unbelievable to think that all one had to do was fall asleep to win a crazy cash prize. The competition was held after lunchtime. Participants were judged on their ability to sleep for around 20 minutes. They were also judged on their sleeping posture, their snore and the speed at which they fell asleep. The winner received a cash prize of €1,000 (₹83,380 approx). Now all this might sound too good to be true, so here’s where the catch is. The sleeping competition contestants had to fall asleep bang in the middle of a busy shopping mall.  The unusual championship organized in Madrid on a national level was done to bring back the age-old tradition of napping after lunch.

The officials from the competition stated that the mission of the championship was to spread the idea that nap belongs to everyone and it must be defended and practised since its healthy. They also revealed that being able to do this in public required having a spirit of a champion and to be a siesta taker. A spokesperson to the Agence France-Presse, Alvaro Vidal stated that they were afraid people might not take part in this as they were afraid of making a fool of themselves. The contestants who took part in this unusual championship had to only fall asleep for 20 minutes. Some of them even wore pyjamas to get into the groove. They were followed by pulse monitors and monitored by judges. Participants who managed to sleep for 20 minutes were rewarded with 20 points. People were also awarded additional points for the best sleeping positions, outfits and loudest snoring. The competition was a success, and Spain holds it every year to promote healthy napping amongst its people.
