Tamil Nadu: 82 Students Suffer From Food Poisoning After Eating Food At College Hostel In Salem; Canteen Closed

Many college-goers depend on canteens and hostel messes for their daily breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. We often hear students complain about the poor-quality food served at these places but most people have no other option than eating whatever is served at these hostels. In a recent similar incident in Salem, more than 80 nursing students ate at their college hostel, fell sick, and suffered from food poisoning. They were even hospitalised.

At least 82 students of the Salem district’s SPC Institute of Nursing Education and Research fell ill after they ate food served at their college hostel. It was on Sunday when about 20 of them faced the symptoms and were taken to a nearby hospital operated by college administration for treatment. They returned to the hostel after some time. Soon, the news caught the attention of the Health Department.

The officials of the Health Department visited the college on the next day and shifted a total of 82 students to the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital, according to a report by The Hindu. All the sick students were suffering from several symptoms before receiving proper treatment on Monday. While most of them faced issues because of dehydration, many suffered from diarrhoea and stomach pain as well.

A total of 5 students were rushed to the emergency ward after complaining about dehydration. All the students were under observation for 24 hours too. Gladly, they are much better now and are in stable condition.

Soon, the Food Safety Department and the Health Department issued a notice to the college hostel. The food department officials visited the hostel yesterday and found that there was no proper hygiene maintenance there. Water used in cooking food was contaminated. Surprisingly, the college did not have permission from the concerned department to operate a hostel. The officials asked for proper answers for every unhealthy thing spotted in the kitchen. The hostel kitchen has been shut now.
