Rauno Posio, program director of Visit Arctic Europe stated “There are so many northern lights visible in Arctic Europe from autumn to early spring that we started giving them names the same way other storms are named. This way, they get their own identities and it’s easier to communicate about them.” Naming the auroras shall allow travellers to share their northern lights experiences with the world. Moreover, scientists can conveniently discuss these storms once they have distinct names. Currently, auroras have names inspired by Nordic culture, history and heritage. Officials pick names from a list of Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish names.
