People Flock To Powai Lake For Crocodile Spotting

As videos circulating on social media show dozens of curious onlookers lining the lake walkway with their phones out, quietly waiting to spot a crocodile coming out from the water. The sightings have quickly evolved into a talking point among photographers and residents, with many calling it one of the city’s most unusual monsoon experiences.

The city on Monday was on red alert due to heavy rainfall, and authorities clearly urged locals to stay indoors and away from water bodies. However, some locals visit the famous Powai Lake to spot crocodiles. The artificial lake is home to Indian marsh crocodiles, also known as muggers, and a previous civic census reported at least 18 crocodiles in the waterbody. Wildlife experts say sightings become more common during the monsoon as rising water levels and changing conditions encourage the reptiles to move around or relax along the coastline.
