Travellers departing from Tiruchirappalli International Airport will soon get to enjoy Manapparai Murukku. The government has set up a special stall selling this snack so that travellers can enjoy it before their flight or buy it as a souvenir to take back home. Here’s what makes this snack special.

Manapparai Murukku Stall At Tiruchirappalli Airport

Manapparai Murukku is a type of murukku (derived from the Tamil word for ‘twisted’, which refers to its shape). Originating in Manapparai in the Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu, Manapparai Murukku is a deep-fried snack made using rice flour and lentil flour (urad dal). Talking about the taste, this murukku is famous for its very satisfying, hard crunch and is often enjoyed with chai.

According to The New Indian Express, the government has decided to set up stalls selling this snack at Tiruchirappalli International Airport to promote it among travellers. With this initiative, air passengers will soon be able to buy the famous Manapparai Murukku at the airport. The stalls will be inaugurated soon. Inspired by the Centre’s ‘One District, One Product’ programme, the initiative aims to ensure that each airport showcases a product native to its region, including handicrafts, food items and more.

This Snack Has A History Dating Back To The 1920s

Did you know that Manapparai Murukku is not just a simple snack? According to The Hindu, it has a long tradition that dates back to the 1920s and began at a railway station. The man behind this snack was called Mani Iyer. He introduced train travellers to this snack by selling murukkus at his vegetarian stall. He used to make them at home and bring them to the station every day. Since then, the snack has continued to attract passengers travelling by train.

Manapparai Murukku is a distinct regional variety of murukku, known for its own taste and crunchy texture. Today, you can find different types of murukku being sold across India, including in North India. They are also known by different names, such as chakli, mudku, murukku, and chakri. While these snacks may look similar, Manapparai Murukku has its own identity, and yes, it has a special connection with Tamil Nadu.
