Mumbai Metro 1 Introduces Mixed-Loop System
Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) launched the mixed-loop system on August 10, 2026. As per Hindustan Times, under this new system, some metro trains will run only between Ghatkopar and Andheri, while others will continue their journey till Versova. The short-loop trains will operate between 6:23 PM and 8:24 PM.
With this plan, MMOPL wants to increase train services on the Ghatkopar-Andheri stretch. This is the busiest route, as more than 85% of commuters travel between these two stations. It has also reduced the waiting time from 3 minutes 20 seconds to just 3 minutes. With this new plan, the metro will carry 20% more commuters.

Commuters Are Unhappy With New Plan
However, not every commuter is happy with this new mixed-loop system. Hindustan Times reported that people travelling to Versova, Azad Nagar and DN Nagar have to wait longer for a full-loop train. A group of passengers has even started an online petition against it. They say MMOPL had tried this system earlier but had to stop it after commuters complained.
The commuters want the metro to add more coaches, increasing the number from four to six, to handle the growing number of passengers. MMOPL says that ending some trains at Andheri will help passengers easily switch to Western Railway local trains. However, commuters say Metro Line 1 already connects with Mumbai Metro Line 2A at DN Nagar and Metro Line 7 at WEH station.
