Bengaluru Metro Gets 1st Blue Line Train With Driverless Tech, LCD Route Maps & More

On Thursday, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) delivered the first driverless-capable train set for Bengaluru Metro’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) Blue Line Metro corridor, which runs via the city’s technology hub. Want to know more about the latest addition? Read on!

Bengaluru Gets Its Driverless Metro Train For Blue Line

As per a report by Moneycontrol, the six-coach train was shipped on trailers from BEML’s manufacturing factory in CV Raman Nagar to Byappanahalli depot. However, the new Byappanahalli depot that will run on the Blue Line is yet to be completed. A BMRCL official told the portal that they will keep the train at Inspection Bay Line and begin depot testing. Once the corridor is finished, they will move the train there.

While all Blue Line trains are expected to have luggage racks, the first train set doesn’t include them. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has requested BEML to further improve the design before installation. The trains are all set to undergo thorough testing for at least five months before being put into operation for passenger service. The new set of trains will also feature LCD-based animated route-map displays and upgraded safety systems. The 18-km high-rise section located between Central Silk Board and KR Pura is scheduled for completion by December 2026.

Metro Work In Progress In Bengaluru

Not only this, but BEML has so far also handed over six train sets for the 7.5km elevated section of the Pink Line between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. The BMRCL intends to start operations on the elevated section by August 15. The remaining 13.7km underground section between Dairy Circle and Nagawara is all set to be completed by December 2026.

Like the Yellow Line (RV Road-Bommasandra), the Pink and Blue lines will also be operated using a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system. As per reports, BMRCL has said that fully automated driverless operations (GoA-4) on both corridors will be introduced at a subsequent stage.

Metro system automation transfers operational responsibilities from drivers to fully automated systems through different Grades of Automation (GoA).  However, BMRCL officials stated that train operators will be required to be onboard at first until the system displays consistent reliability and passengers become comfortable with driverless operations.
