Massive nationwide protests are sweeping across France due to anger over poor conditions in public schools and the high cost of living. The situation has led to civil unrest, with protesters targeting luxury retailers and setting fire to vehicles in several cities. Here’s what you should know.

Why Are People Protesting In France?

According to The New York Times, France is currently witnessing some of its worst unrest in years. The protests have led to riots, looting and damage across the country. The main reasons behind the protests are students demanding better school conditions and citizens expressing anger over the high cost of living in France. More than half a million people joined marches across the country on October 17. While many people protested peacefully, some groups vandalised shops, leading to thousands of arrests.

An arson attack also damaged the town hall in Limoges, in central France. Reportedly, students are unhappy with the way schools are operating. They have complained about poor infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages and underfunding.

Moreover, high school students blockaded hundreds of schools during the protests and set fire to or damaged at least 24 of them. Other groups, frustrated by the high cost of living and rising fuel prices, also joined the protests, making the situation much bigger.

Luxury Stores Targeted As Protests Turn Violent

According to Moneycontrol, luxury stores across the country have also been targeted. In Bordeaux, looters smashed the storefronts of brands such as Apple, Louis Vuitton and Hermès. In Paris, masked demonstrators vandalised shops and restaurants, while vehicles were also set ablaze. The unrest also significantly affected Lyon, Marseille, Rouen, Nantes and Toulouse, with reports of arson attacks and vandalism.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu condemned the violent attacks in France. According to him, peaceful protests have their place in the country, but looting and attacks do not. President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the violence and stated that those responsible for vandalism and looting would face legal action.

The US Embassy in Paris has advised tourists to avoid large gatherings, check transport apps before travelling and stay away from central protest squares. While tourist attractions may remain open, demonstrations can lead to last-minute closures and road delays.

According to Moneycontrol, France is not the only country witnessing unrest. Italy is also facing violent protests. In Milan, a march against wars and rising living costs turned violent after protestors clashed with police, looted shops and set fire to public property.
