The best way to travel in India is by train. Train journeys are surely one of the best ways to explore the mesmerising nature and beauty of India. Talking about toy trains, they have been a part of India since forever and are one of the experiences that every traveller should have. A Twitter user shared a list of such picturesque mountain railway toy trains in India, and we cannot wait to hop on one. 

Picturesque Mountain Railway Toy Trains in India

1. Nilgiri Mountain Toy Train

This toy train runs on the revered Nilgiri Mountains and is one of the most known attractions in Ooty. The track, which travels 46 kilometres (28.5 miles) from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor, crosses 250 bridges, including 32 significant ones, and goes through 16 tunnels. Many people get down to Coonoor to explore the beautiful tea plantations.

2. Kalka-Shimla Toy Train

The Kalka-Shimla toy train is known as a historic one and is one of the best ways to reach Shimla. The entire journey takes at least 5 hours and starts in Kalka, near Chandigarh, and ends in Shimla. It travels 96 kilometres (60 miles) and passes through 20 stations, 103 tunnels, 800 bridges, and an astounding 900 turns.

3. Matheran Toy Train

Neral is just halfway between Mumbai and Pune and is exactly where this picturesque mountain journey begins. The track of the Matheran toy train is just 20 kilometres long, which is approximately 12 miles. But it takes 2 and a half hours to complete it as the train has to slowly glide up on its way in a zigzag manner. 

4. Ooty Toy Train

It is the same one as the Nilgiri Mountain Toy Train. 

5. Darjeeling Mountain Toy Train 

The Darjeeling Mountain Toy Train is the oldest of all the historic mountain railways in India. It helps people reach the lush greenery of Darjeeling from the lower region of the Eastern Himalayas. The railway travels 80 kilometres (50 miles) through Siliguri, Kurseong, and Ghoom before arriving at Darjeeling, which is located in the West Bengal state.

6. Kangra Valley Toy Train

The Kangra Valley Toy Train is known as the last mountain railway built in India. The lengthy track is 102 miles (164 kilometres) long, and the journey takes 10 hours. The journey begins from Pathankot in Punjab to Joginder Nagar in Himachal Pradesh. The route goes via Kangra and Palampur.
