What Is The 100ml Liquid Rule At Airports, & Which Airports No Longer Follow It?

If you have ever taken carry-on luggage on a flight, then you must be aware of the 100ml liquid rule. It basically means that you cannot take large bottles of liquids, gels or pastes in your carry-on luggage. Every single bottle must hold 100 ml or less. Here’s a look at which airports across the world have already eased this rule, making travel easier for passengers.

What Is The 100ml Liquid Rule At Airports?

When we travel, we often carry essentials like shampoo, sunscreen, and more. But if you have ever packed a carry-on bag for a flight, you must know that you cannot carry any liquid bottle exceeding 100ml. This is why many brands now sell travel-friendly bottles under 100ml specifically for travellers.

Under this rule, passengers can carry liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in their carry-on luggage only if each container has 100 ml or less quantity. Plus, these items must be placed inside a clear resealable bag. According to The Indian Express, several airports around the world are now relaxing or removing this rule altogether. With advanced screening technology in place, travellers may soon be able to carry larger quantities of liquids in their hand luggage.

These Airports No Longer Follow This Rule

According to The Indian Express, this restriction was introduced worldwide after the 2006 Transatlantic Aircraft Plot exposed security vulnerabilities in aviation. It was difficult for airport authorities to properly screen liquids, which is why the rule was adopted. This rule has often been criticised by passengers for being confusing and inconvenient.

Keeping this in mind, a few airports across the world have relaxed the rule. This includes selected terminals at Heathrow Airport in London, London City Airport, Teesside International Airport, and selected areas at Birmingham Airport. These airports are now using next-generation security scanners like Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, which make it easier to scan liquids. Unlike traditional X-ray machines, CT scanners can create three-dimensional images of bag contents.
