Valley Of Flowers Uttarakhand: Experts Call To Impose Cap On Visitors To The UNESCO Heritage To Conserve Flora

Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand is one of the most famous tourist spots in the state. The place has broken its own previous records as it witnessed about 20,000 visitors in just 5 months this year. This UNESCO world heritage site recorded about 17,424 visitors in 2019 which was the highest since its formation. But experts have called to impose a cap on visitors as it is a fragile valley.

A Cap On Visitors Visiting The Valley Of Flowers

In experts’ opinions, the Valley of Flowers is an ecologically sensitive area. As the valley is fragile, they have asked for a policy that restricts the number of visitors to the spot. The botanists, social activists and also locals have asked the government to regulate tourism-related activities in this place. They fear that the valley will be exposed to excess anthropogenic pressure.

The valley in March this year witnessed the melting of the Tipra glacier because of the heat in the Garhwal Himalayas. It has also witnessed the blooming of flowers, a fortnight earlier than usual. This year, in July the valley was also closed suddenly due to excess rainfall and boulders rolling down.

Discussions On The Matter Are In Process

Dr SP Singh, senior ecologist and alpine expert feels that there is something wrong when we talk about tourism boosting the economy. He stresses the importance of research to understand the vulnerability of this spot due to increasing tourist footfall.

According to a TOI report, he further added that it is very important that research is conducted on all aspects of the valley including its flora and fauna. This can help us determine the exact cap on the tourist footfall in the area. People should also be educated towards the sensitivity of this area and then be allowed to visit the place. Gaurav Negi, range officer, at Valley of Flowers, said that the discussion on the carrying capacity of this tourist spot is in process.
