Stargazing at Ajanta Caves

Chandrashekar Jaiswal, general manager of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), said that the stargazing project will take place at a secluded site. This site will be away from light and offer a 270-degree view of the Ajanta Caves hills. The site will be known as “Ajanta View Point.” The location of the site will be the same place where Madras Presidency officer John Smith discovered the caves while hunting a tiger. The project will be a community-based tourism project. Locals will be well trained regarding the use of telescopes so that they can provide basic knowledge about the stars in the sky. The place already has the needed amenities for visitors.

A Season-Based Project

Stargazing is a season-based project because viewing them is not possible every day for 12 months. It is generally done in the months of the winter season as the sky is clear then. This project at Ajanta caves is also season based and the dark outer area of the site will make the stars more clearly visible. The stargazing will begin as soon as it is dark and will be continued for about two to three hours. The general manager of MTDC said that the plans to begin this project are towards the end of November. Sanjay Harne, the regional manager, informed us that the basic amenities have been roped in and the hiring of people for the same is under process.
