What Is The Revised Cost Of Japan Rail Pass From October 1? How Will It Affect Indians?

Travelling across Japan by train is something tourists really enjoy. But now there’s an update for international travellers, including those from India. From October 2026, Japan Rail Pass prices will change, so it’s good to stay updated if you’re planning a trip. Keep reading to know what’s changing!

Japan Is Increasing Rail Pass Prices

If you’re planning a trip to Japan after October, you may need to increase your budget slightly. According to NDTV, starting October 1, 2026, the Japan Rail Pass is expected to become more expensive for foreign tourists, with a proposed increase of around 5–6%. This comes after a price hike in 2023, meaning travellers will face another increase within a few years.

The Japan Rail Pass is one of the simplest and most famous ways to explore Japan. It lets you travel unlimited on most Shinkansen bullet trains, plus many express and local trains, buses, and even a few ferries. It makes city-hopping really easy. But there’s a catch, the fastest trains, like Nozomi and Mizuho, are not fully included. If you want to ride them, you’ll need to pay a little extra.

How Much Will Train Travel Cost In Japan?

From October 1, the 7-day standard Japan Rail Pass will cost 53,000 yen (about ₹29,000–₹30,000) after a 3,000 yen increase. NDTV reported that the 14-day pass will be priced at 84,000 yen (around ₹46,000–₹48,000) after a 4,000 yen hike. The 21-day pass will rise by 5,000 yen and will cost 105,000 yen (around ₹57,000–₹60,000). For travellers who want more comfort, the Green Car option will also be available. The 7-day Green Car pass will cost 74,000 yen, which will be about ₹40,000–₹42,000.

If you are travelling to multiple cities and using long-distance bullet trains, the pass can save you money and is a good deal. But if you are mostly staying in just one or two cities like Tokyo, buying individual train tickets may be cheaper.
