Wildlife Week is an annual celebration in India that raises awareness about wildlife conservation and highlights the importance of preserving biodiversity. Observed during October, it aims to educate the public about the significance of wildlife and their habitats, promoting a better understanding of the challenges faced by various species and ecosystems. The 70th Wildlife Week is being celebrated across India from October 2 to October 8, 2024.

 Wildlife Week Celebrations In India

Celebrations began on Wednesday in Dehradun, marking a significant occasion dedicated to promoting awareness about wildlife conservation. The event kicked off with a philately exhibition at the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority complex. At Doon Zoo in Malsi village, several programmes took place to engage locals in understanding and celebrating the theme of this year’s event: Human-Wildlife Coexistence.

In Mysuru, the century-old Mysuru zoo launched a series of activities aimed at educating the public on wildlife conservation. The activities include a cyclothon, photography exhibitions, a waste-to-wealth event, and wildlife-themed competitions. The goal is to create awareness about the importance of wildlife and its conservation.

Wildlife Week was also inaugurated at Ranchi, highlighting Jharkhand’s abundant biodiversity. The event saw active participation from students, NGOs, and members of Joint Forest Management Committees. Cultural programmes and performances celebrated wildlife and nature, while local leaders stressed the importance of collective responsibility in protecting the state’s rich wildlife.

The Importance Of Conservation

In Jammu and Kashmir, an event marked the celebrations at Dachigam National Park. The focus was on encouraging school students to learn about wildlife and understand the importance of conservation. Activities included nature walks and workshops led by experts.

In Assam, the 70th Wildlife Week began with a vibrant programme at the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden. Environment Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary led the inauguration, which featured a procession showcasing the state’s rich wildlife heritage. The celebrations included street plays focused on conservation and were part of a broader campaign that linked wildlife preservation with cleanliness drives.

The Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary also joined the celebrations, focusing on reducing human-wildlife conflicts and promoting coexistence. Throughout the week, organisers plan events to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and educate the community on preserving biodiversity. Likewise, the Tata Steel Zoological Park in Jamshedpur hosted various activities for school and college students, including painting and debate competitions, as part of its events.
