After making a name for himself as an entrepreneur, Tumbbad-famed actor Sohum Shah shifted from Sri Ganganagar to Mumbai to work in the film industry. Over the years, he has established himself as an actor and producer. So, when we got together with him over a delicious Sunday Brunch, we couldn’t help but ask if there were ever moments of doubt that he faced during the six-seven years it took him to make the much-acclaimed film, Tumbbad. Here’s what he had to say.
Sohum Shah Talks About His Much-Loved Film Tumbbad
Tumbbad, one of the most loved and critically acclaimed films of recent years, took almost 6-7 years to hit the theatres. While the global reach and impact of the film are undeniable, it must have been a nerve-wracking experience for actor and producer Sohum Shah. So, during the Sunday Brunch episode, our Editor-in-Chief Kamiya Jani asked if Sohum ever felt any doubts while shooting the film or if it became irrelevant to the audience, keeping in mind the long time it took to come to life.
He said that in all his time in Mumbai, there have only been a handful of incidents where he felt like a failure and one of them was after Tumbbad was released. He said that after spending 7 years making a film, one ends up thinking they have created a masterpiece. However, after the lukewarm reception during the first weekend of the film, he felt a little down.
The tables soon turned, however! Sohum Shah shares that after the good reviews, he started getting appreciation from his fellow industry people. He recalls getting congratulatory calls and texts from Shakun Batra and Abhishek Kapoor after the film was finally released.

Sohum shared that the writing for the film is complete, and they are likely to begin shooting in 2025 or early 2026. He also expressed his surprise and shock at how well Tumbbad performed, despite already being available on OTT platforms. This, he believes, signals a shift in what audiences want to see.
