1/4th Of World’s Adult Diabetics Are From India
On World Diabetes Day, The Lancet published a report that showed India is leading the global diabetes list with more than 21.2 crore cases reported in 2022. Worldwide, the report showed that 82.8 crore people are estimated to be living with diabetes, as per data from 2022. While India topped the list, the other nations with the most cases of diabetes are China (14.8 crore), the USA (4.2 crore), Pakistan (3.6 crore), Indonesia (2.5 crore), and Brazil (2.2 crore).
As per The Economic Times, diabetes in women in India increased from 11.9% in 1990 to 23.7 in 2022. Meanwhile, in Indian men, data showed an increase from 11.3% in 1990 to 21.4% in 2022. Report Shows Global Diabetes Rate Increasing Drastically
The Lancet report showed that 82.8 crore cases of diabetes – either type 1 or 2 – were recorded across the world. This is a massive surge from the 20 crore cases that were reported in 1990. Reportedly, the largest increase has been observed in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).
According to The Indian Express, this study was conducted by the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) in collaboration with WHO. For this, the researchers used data from over 140 million, 18-plus people available in more than 1,000 studies. To know if a person has high sugar levels or not, they used the criteria of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level of 7.0 mmol/L or 126 mg/dL and HbA1c (average blood sugar count of three months) count of 6.5% or higher.
This massive increase in the diabetes rate in India is alarming and calls for introspection. Share your two cents on this in the comments section.
