World’s 10 Most Unsafe Countries For Women Travellers

Women are opting for solo travel more than ever now! We see so many vlogs on Youtube where women go out travelling solo and explore some amazing destinations on their own. However, the truth is that travelling alone can be a dangerous endeavour.So before you decide your destination as women travellers, know this list of the most unsafe countries in the world in 2023 as per the World Population Review.

If you are a solo female traveller, you must know that South Africa is the most unsafe or dangerous country for you. The country has records of sexual violence, and only 25% of women said that they feel safe while roaming alone at night in this country. The estimation says that over 40% of women in this country will be raped in their lifetime. In terms of intentional homicides of women, the country has the worst ranking.

Brazil ranks as the second most unsafe country in the world for women travellers. In terms of intentional homicide against women, the country has the third-highest rate. Only 28% of women here feel safe while walking alone at night on the streets. With 36.9%, this country ranks sixth in terms of sexual or physical violence from partners.

This country has the second-highest rate of intentional homicide against women. This ranking is one of the main reasons for this country’s third-place ranking on the list of unsafe countries. Russia is also one of those countries that limits women’s participation in the economy and society with their laws and regulations.

Only 33% of women in Mexico said that they feel safe roaming around at night. With this percentage, it ranks fourth on the list of the most unsafe countries for women. It also ranks fourth on the list of intentional homicides against women. In terms of non-partner sexual violence, Mexico ranks third, which accounts for 16% of women.

Iran ranks first in terms of gender gaps, which is one of the prominent reasons why it is on the list of dangerous countries for women. This index tracks the differences between men and women in terms of political empowerment, health, educational attainment, and economic engagement. It also ranked third for legal discrimination against women.

6. Dominican Republic

This country in the Caribbean has the fifth-highest rate of intentional homicide against women. About 33% of women said that they feel safe during the night while walking on the street. In terms of gender disparity as measured by health, economic empowerment, and the labour market, the Dominican Republic comes in sixth place.

Egypt is the seventh-most unsafe place for women travellers.In terms of laws and policies that restrict women’s participation in society and the economy, Egypt is ranked sixth. Egypt has the seventh-highest level of gender inequality and the fourth-highest gender gap in the world.

The highest proportion on the list—approximately 45% of Moroccan women—experience physical or sexual abuse at the hands of an intimate partner. Approximately 32% of women concur that there are instances when violence against women is acceptable.

With a rate of 37.2%, intimate partner violence in India is ranked sixth. India is ranked first in the index measuring gender inequality. In a survey of Indian women, about 45% of them believed that, under some circumstances, beating one’s spouse or partner is acceptable.

Intimate partner violence, which 44% of women reported, is second most common in Thailand. Additionally, the highest percentage of women across the 50 countries studied—about 61%—agreed that violence against women can be justified in some situations.
