Findings From The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Annual Ranking

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranked countries according to 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five categories including stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

The pandemic has shaken things up, majority shuffling the cities that made it to the annual ranking. Auckland made it to the top spot, pushing away Vienna, which held the top spot since 2018. Following Auckland were Osaka and Tokyo in Japan, Adelaide in Australia and Wellington in New Zealand, all of which stood out for their successful approach in containing the pandemic.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in a statement said that-“New Zealand’s tough lockdown allowed their society to reopen and enabled citizens of cities like Auckland and Wellington to enjoy a lifestyle that looked similar to pre-pandemic life.”

On the other hand, European cities performed poorly on the list. Vienna, which has been one of the most liveable cities since 2018 dropped to the 12th position. The biggest fall was witnessed by the port city of Hamburg in northern Germany, which fell to the 47th position.

While Australia, New Zealand and Japan bagged the top spots, places like Dhaka, Bangladesh, Karachi, Pakistan and Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, have remained in the bottom for a while now.
