From Italy To Singapore, THESE Are The Top 10 Sober Travel Destinations; Teetotallers, Make Plans!

For many, travel is an enriching experience, but for those in recovery, it can present challenges. A new study by Lantana Recovery, a rehab facility, looked to identify the most suitable sober travel destinations. They ranked countries based on factors like the number of sober-friendly activities, alcohol consumption rates, public safety and alcohol laws.

Top Sober Travel Destinations

The study identified Iceland, with its abundance of activities and focus on safety, as the most traveller-friendly destination for sober travellers. Following closely behind are Italy, boasting the world’s lowest alcohol dependence rate, and Norway, with the strictest alcohol laws. Interestingly, Europe dominates the top ten, with six countries making the cut. These include Italy, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Rounding out the list are popular travel destinations like Japan, Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand.

The Sober Travel Destinations Index is a resource for those seeking recovery-friendly travel destinations. It considers a variety of factors to create a ranking system. Metrics include the number of sober activities per capita, along with data on alcohol consumption, alcohol laws, safety and overall health. Information is gathered from various sources including the World Health Organisation, World Population Review and CEO World. This data is then weighted and combined to create a score for each destination, providing a helpful overview for travellers prioritising sobriety.

Staying Sober While Travelling

While the study offers a great starting point, staying sober on your travels requires extra effort. Before you go, solidify your commitment and plan activities you’ll enjoy that don’t involve alcohol. Pack healthy snacks and distractions for airports, and have a plan to manage triggers. Schedule enriching activities like hikes or cultural exploration, and pre-book them for structure. Stay connected to your support network back home, and consider joining local sober groups at your destination.

Pack a self-care kit with familiar comforts and find accommodation that aligns with your goals, like a wellness retreat. Practise relaxation techniques to manage stress, and communicate your sobriety goals to your travel companions. Explore local sober communities for a sense of belonging, and celebrate your milestones with special treats to reinforce your commitment to recovery.
