Alliance Air was allotted 28 non-operational routes under the UDAN scheme recently. Awarded under the short-bidding round of UDAN 5.3, these routes focus on priority routes and for promoting tourism. According to a report by The Financial Express, Alliance Air was awarded these routes because they were prepared to launch services in a shorter time, as compared to other bidding airlines. As per the report, the Ministry of Civil Aviation allotted Alliance Air these routes because they had manpower and aircraft ready to deploy on these routes.

It is to be noted that the previous allotment for these routes has been cancelled by the ministry. In the previous year alone, the Civil Aviation Ministry had to cancel 500 of the total 1,300 routes allotted under the UDAN scheme. This was mainly due to the fact that the airlines showed no signs of starting services on those routes. Keeping all this in mind, the ministry decided on a short-bidding round on these routes as it is a faster way to re-auction non-operational routes.

As mentioned, these new routes by Alliance Air will operate on priority routes as well as to promote tourism. As per The Financial Express’s report, these routes include, Ahmedabad-Keshod, Guwahati-Rupsi, Guwahati-Tezu, Imphal-Tezu, Jaipur-Bikaner, Jalgaon-Ahmedabad, Jalgaon-Mumbai, Jothat-Pasighat, Kolkata-Rupsi, and Kullu-Jaipur.

The UDAN scheme was launched in 2016. Its aim has been to promote air connectivity on “under-served or unserved routes.” As per reports, nearly 150 airports, including eight heliports, have been developed or operationalised under the scheme.

We hope that these routes become operational soon and help improve the air connectivity in the country! Share your thoughts on this in the comments!
