Arunachal Pradesh- known as the land of the rising sun, is known for so many things. It’s not only home to the second largest monastery in the world-Tawang Monastery, but also the first place in India to receive sunlight. And when people visit Arunachal, they only consider visiting Diarang, Tawang, and Bomdila- however, there’s so much more to this northeastern state than just these places. And if you are planning to visit Arunachal soon, then here are four places near Tawang that you must check out by all means.

Places To Visit Near Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

1. Bum La Pass

Located 50-55Km from Tawang, Bum La Pass is at 15200ft above sea level at the Indo-China border. One needs a special permit to visit the Bum La pass, obtained at Tawang’s DC office. You cannot apply for it online and need to take one in Tawang. Local guide, your cab drivers can arrange one for you as well. Once you reach Bum La, you can eat at the Military canteen and shop for jackets, tracksuits, etc. There is a 15-minute briefing for the tourists, where the Army officials share the history and significance of this pass. Due to security reasons, photography/videography beyond a point is prohibited. Bum La pass is open for tourists till 11 am, so make sure to start early from Tawang.

2. Sungester Lake

Also known as Madhuri Lake, this lake in Tawang is near Bum La Pass. Tawang is known for its lakes, and it cannot be missed. The stunning beauty and view this lake offers will spellbind you. Madhuri Dixit had shot a song from the movie Koyala at this lake- hence it’s popularly known as Madhuri Lake.

3. Zemithang

Tawang is usually known as the place that offers you calm and tranquillity- however, it’s Zemithang that has so much more of this. Located 70km from Tawang, this small town is known for the gorgeous Gorsam Chorten Monastery, which is almost seven centuries old. If you want to experience a laidback life, add this place to your list.

4. Sela Pass

Your visit to Arunachal is incomplete without visiting Sela Pass. Known as one of the highest altitude mountain passes in India, it is situated 70-80KM near Tawang. While travelling to Tawang, you first cross Sela Pass, and then a scenic drive leads you to Tawang.
