Biryani is probably the most loved food item in India. If there’s one thing that Indians can unanimously agree with, it is that biryani is delicious. And honestly, we agree too! India’s love for biryani is well-documented too. According to the year-end report that Zomato released in 2022, biryani was the most ordered food item on their app. When it comes to biryanis, there are a few stars that shine brighter than the others. Bombay biryani and Hyderabadi biryani are delicious and have their place in our hearts, however, today, we want to talk about some lesser-known biryanis. Here are 5 lesser-known types of biryanis traditionally eaten in India.

1. Thalasseri Biryani

Thalasseri Biryani also known as Tellicheri biryani is most popular in the northern region of the Indian state of Kerala. This delicious variation of biryani is made using the kaima variety of rice which is popular in Kerala. Owing to this fact, the biryani is also known as Kerala biryani. It is aromatic and distinctive in taste and is made all over the state. Don’t call yourself a biryani lover unless you’ve tasted this.

2. Chettinad Biryani

Since we’re on the topic of Biryanis in South India, we cannot miss Chettinad Biryani from the state of Tamil Nadu. Chettinad Biryani is one of its many names, others being Ambur biryani and Arcot biryani. You can call it whatever you want but we call it delicious! A confluence of Tamil spices, the aroma itself will make your mouth water. If you’ve never tasted this biryani, you absolutely must.

3. Memoni Biryani

This variety of biryani is not as well-known as its other counterparts. Originated by the Memon people of the Gujarat-Sindh region, this variation of biryani also has its fans, not just within the country, but also across the border in Pakistan. It is traditionally prepared with lamb or mutton and consists of yoghurt, tomatoes, potatoes, and fried onions. If you plan on having this, better keep some dessert handy because this dish is fiery.

4. Kalyani Biryani

When you think of Hyderabad and biryanis, chances are you’ll only think of the extremely popular Hyderabadi biryani that is served with mirchi salan and raita. While we won’t disagree that it is delicious, that is not the only type of biryani that Hyderabad has to offer. Kalyani biryani consists of buffalo meat that is flavoured with many aromatic spices. This biryani can easily give Hyderabadi biryani a run for its money.

5. Bhatkali Biryani

With roots in the state of Karnataka, this Kannadiga iteration of the beloved biryani will blow you away. It is a crucial part of the now mostly forgotten Navayath cuisine. In case you don’t know, Navayath cuisine is the local cuisine of Karnataka. It has a rich history featuring many delicious food items. Bhatkali biryani is also one of the more spicy versions of biryani so be careful when eating. Make sure you keep something sweet handy.
