Your Goa plans just got more convenient! Goa has a new international airport and it is open for business. The first phase of the airport was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. This new airport in Mopa, North Goa, has been named after late Manohar Parrikar, the former Chief Minister of Goa. He passed away a few years ago in March 2019. Here are 5 things to know about this brand new airport.

1. Cost Of Building The Airport

The Mopa or Manohar Parrikar International Airport cost a total of  2,870 to build. PM Modi is optimistic about the inauguration and believes that it will significantly boost the tourism industry.

2. Capacity Of The Airport

Since the airport is just in its initial phase, the present capacity is not final. The capacity of the airport will grow as it continues to build. The airport can currently take up to 44 lakh passengers a year. By the next year, when the airport construction is finished, this will grow and go up to one crore per year.

3. Second International Airport In Goa

The new Manohar Parrikar International Airport is the second international airport in Goa. GMR International Airport, the company that built the airport, is also optimistic about it. In a series of tweets, they said that they believed that the new airport would be greatly beneficial in developing Goa socially and economically.

4. Cargo Facility Available

The only other international airport in Goa is the Dabolim airport. It has the capacity of handling up to 85 lakh passengers per year. However, it lacks the facility to transport cargo. The new Mopa airport, on the other hand, does have this facility.

5. Technology And Infrastructure

The new airport incorporates state-of-the-art technology and 3-D monolithic precast technology was used in the construction of the aviation skill development centre. Moreover, the infrastructure of the airport is built in such a way that it is compatible with 5G technology for improved connectivity in airports.

The officials are all confident that the new airport will be very advantageous for the state of Goa.
