Volcanoes are easily one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena. These geological formations are proof of how dangerous but alluring nature can be. And you don’t even have to leave the country to witness these rocky marvels! India has a total of seven volcanoes, one of which is still active. Five of these are either dormant or extinct, and one is a mud volcano. Here are seven volcanoes that you’ll find in India!

1. Barren Island, Andaman Islands

Located on the Andaman Islands, this is the only active volcano in India. The latest eruption at the volcano was on the 2nd of May, this year. During the eruption, hot ash was spewed which spread 4.6 kilometres wide.

2. Baratang Island, Andaman Islands

This is an active mud volcano. A mud volcano is a landform which is created when slurry, mud, is spewed to the surface along with gas. It doesn’t spew lava like regular volcanoes. In other parts of the world, people enjoy mud baths at some mud volcanoes.

3. Narcondam Volcano, Andaman Islands

Another volcano in the Andaman Islands, it is classified by the Geological Survey of India as a dormant volcano. Regardless, the place still witnesses a high number of footfall each year.

4. Dhosi Hill, Haryana

Dhosi Hill in Haryana is an important site from the Vedic period. It is an extinct volcano and people love visiting it every year. In case you were wondering, the difference between a dormant volcano and an extinct volcano is that it is unlikely that an extinct volcano will erupt in the future. However, dormant volcanoes are just those that haven’t erupted for a long time but may still erupt in the future.

5. Tosham Hill, Haryana

This particular volcano is one of the extinct volcanoes in the country. Given that the volcano existed a long time ago, the ring of the volcano is now buried under the soil of the later years.

6. Loktak Lake, Manipur

One of the most beautiful lakes in the country, and possibly in the world, Loktak Lake is a volcanic caldera. A caldera is a depression formed after the emptying of the magma chambers. The Loktak Lake is uniquely is formed and is a sight to behold.

7. Dhinodhar Hills, Gujarat

Another extinct volcano, this relic of a bygone era is definitely worth visiting. You can still see its volcanic plug. The plug or the neck is formed when the magma hardens in the vent of an active volcano.
