Over the years, there has been a growing preference for Western desserts, however, the love for traditional Indian sweets is irreplaceable! And this was proven in a recent survey by Scandalous Foods. According to the survey, 82% of Indians prefer traditional sweets, in comparison to cakes and ice creams. The study further revealed that there is also a growing trend that showed how Indian masses are now moving towards healthier desserts as well. Read on to know more!

Scandalous Foods’s “Exploring the Evolving Landscape of Indian Sweets: Trends in Post-Meal Consumption Across India” report, made some interesting observations about Indians and their love for desserts! The survey focussed on the HoReCa (hotels, restaurants, and catering) segment, was conducted on 1,000 consumers in more than 100 restaurants.

The survey aimed to understand the dessert preferences among Indian consumers and it revealed that a staggering 82% of them prefer indulging in traditional sweets after meals. It said that Indian consumers like to indulge in Indian desserts like Rasmalai and Shahi Tukda. Besides that, around 25% of Indian consumers prefer chocolates, 10% like ice creams, and around 20% wish for cakes after their meals.

According to the survey’s observation, on special occasions such as festivals, weddings, and corporate events, the inclination towards traditional Indian sweets intensifies. This is highly due to the cultural understanding that equates celebrations with sweets.

Here are some more interesting insights from the survey. To begin with, Indians like to enjoy sweets during dinner or evening meals. The consumers also showed curiosity about exploring innovative and fusion variations of traditional sweets. This is mainly driven by social media influence and a desire for new culinary experiences.

Another noteworthy trend revealed in this survey was the shift towards healthier dessert choices. There is a growing demand for desserts that are lower in sugar, utilise healthier ingredients, and cater to specific dietary preferences among Indians.
