The price of coconut oil continues to surge in the market, especially in Kerala. With the festive season, like Onam, around the corner, rising prices have become a concern in many households. Several manufacturers have now resorted to selling adulterated or fake oil disguised as pure coconut oil, raising serious health concerns. Read on to know more.
Fake Coconut Oil Floods Markets Ahead of Onam Season
As per a report by The Hindu, the rising price of coconut oil has turned into a growing concern for households. With the upcoming Onam season, prices are expected to touch anywhere between ₹500 to ₹600 per litre, especially in the southern states of India. The high demand for coconut oil has pushed many companies to sell adulterated versions at low prices.
According to a report by Onmanorama, these blended coconut oils are made by mixing pure coconut oil with other edible oils and selling them at significantly lower prices. The price difference is shocking! 1 litre of pure coconut oil costs around ₹440, while blended variants are being sold for ₹100 or less. However, the strong aroma and flavour of coconut oil often dominate the blend, making it difficult for buyers to detect adulteration. The increasing availability of such adulterated oils poses a serious health risk to consumers.

Food Safety Test Raises Concerns
As per Onmanorama, a recent test conducted by the Food Safety Department found 1 coconut oil brand to be heavily adulterated. The samples were sent to a food testing lab in Thiruvananthapuram. However, the results are expected to take at least 2 months.
There is also a growing demand for stricter regulations on such products. Brands must list all ingredients on their labels so that consumers know whether they are buying pure or blended oil. Products sold without proper labelling or ingredient disclosure will be considered fake and punishable under the law. Despite rising prices, reports claim that the market remains largely unaffected. A large number of people still prefer pure coconut oil over blended alternatives. Furthermore, prices are expected to rise even further in the coming months.
How To Identify Adulterated Coconut Oil
Identifying adulterated oil is quite easy. First, start by checking the label; it should say 100% coconut oil, with no preservatives or chemicals added. However, if it mentions the use of mineral oil or any other edible oils, it means the oil is adulterated. Apart from that, you can also try the fridge test. Pure coconut oil will solidify below 25°C, while adulterated versions will remain partially liquid. Furthermore, it should be noted that pure coconut oil has a mild aroma, while adulterated ones often have a strong, artificial coconut scent.
