The air quality of Mumbai has taken a serious hit in recent years. With the amount of construction the city is witnessing, air pollution has significantly risen. This poses a major threat to the health and well-being of the citizens. A recent study found that the air quality of the financial capital of the country has gone down by a whopping 22 per cent in the last five years. Here are all of the important details about this study.

According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express or IE, the study was conducted by the Praja Foundation. The report was published on Tuesday, May 28. It revealed some alarming statistics about the air quality of the city.

Between the years 2019 and 2023, the air quality deteriorated by 22 per cent. What is more, as per the data provided by the Central Pollution Control Board or CPCB, the air quality raises concerns. In 2023, the air quality was “good” for 15 per cent of the days.

19 per cent of the days, which amounts to 71 days, were registered as satisfactory. Around 96 days or 26 per cent of the says, the air quality was just “moderate.” Two days during the last year recorded “very poor” air quality.

Complaints About Air Pollutions Have Gone Up By 305 Per Cent

In addition to these worrying details, the study has also revealed that complaints about air pollution have risen by more than 300 per cent. The data was provided by the Centralised Complaint Registration System or CCRS.

It is a part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC. As per the data, in 2019, there were around 169 complaints. However, in 2023, there were a total of 658 complaints about these issues. What is even more worrying is that the BMC took an average of 32 days to solve the flagged complaints when it should have been done in around six days.
