Bubble tea feels like a warm hug on a winter day! With the sloshy bobas and sweetness of the tea and sometimes even some fruit syrups, with all these awesomeness, boba teas are now a trending beverage all around the world. Every time you open Instagram or Pinterest, you might have someone posing with their boba cup. Such is its supremacy! But how did this bubble tea become such a popularity all of a sudden in India? Where does it originate from? Let’s take a walk down to memory lane of history and the origin of boba tea.

How Did Bubble Tea Originate?

Raise your hands if you are sipping on boba tea and reading its history! It is a nice idea, right? Long back in the 17th century, the story of bubble tea began. But it was not such a worldwide dominating beverage back then. Late in the 1980s, boba culture became super famous in Taiwan. There are many reports suggesting various origins of this drink but it is believed that it gained its supreme popularity in Taiwan itself as people here were great tea drinkers.

The fun part is that the idea of bubble tea is actually an idea to mix some food items together. It is said that tapioca balls used for boba and shaved ice were loved desserts back then. The love and popularity for these items gave the idea to mix all these together to prepare the coolest drink, bubble tea. The recipe was quite simple and very similar to the ones served now. Start by layering tapioca bobas on the bottom of the glass and then layer shaved ice and tea to it.

Boba Tea Has So Many Names!

Bubble tea is known by so many names all around the world. Some use the most common boba tea, while some even call it pearl tea.

Do you know the reason behind naming this drink boba tea? It is said that the term is derived from a Chinese word. Boba is a slang of the Chinese language for boobs. And because of the shape of the tapioca balls, the drink got its name.
