This lockdown has given rise to online food deliveries and takeaways. Ordering food and eating it at the comfort of one’s home is now a safer option. With Bangalore ordering the most food online in India amid the lockdown, there has also been a need to stay cautious against online scams. Recently a 58-year-old woman in the city fell prey to an online scam while ordering a meal. She lost a whopping ₹50,000 to cybercrime while ordering a meal for just ₹250. Read on to know more.

Bangalore Online Food Scam Makes Woman Lose ₹50,000

In 2019, a techie from Koramangala in Bangalore lost ₹95,000 in an online scam while ordering pizza. One year later, a 58-year-old woman from Yelachenahalli in South Bangalore lost ₹50,000 to a similar online food scam. Savita Sharma first saw an Ad on Facebook offering two thalis for free on ordering just one that cost ₹250. The restaurant according to the ad was located in Sadashivanagar.

According to The Indian Express, Savita Sharma called up the number given in the ad. She told the operator that she wished to order a meal for ₹250. The operator stated that she must pay an advance of ₹10. The person on the other side stated that she can hand over the remaining amount in cash on delivery of the food at her doorstep. The restaurant sent a link to Sharma on her phone to fill a form. While filling the form, Savita shared her debit card details and PIN number.

In just a few moments, she received a message on her phone about ₹49,996 getting debited from her account. She immediately called the same number and realised that the cellphone number was switched off. The Indian Express reports that Savita Sharma filed a complaint with Cyber Crime, Economic Offences & Narcotics (CEN) police station. The police are currently investigating the case.
