On May 18, Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of new Covid cases in India since the start of the pandemic last March. WIth 33, 059 positive cases in one day, the total state tally went to 16,64,350. The state also recorded 364 casualties in the past 24 hours. Out of the 37 districts of the state, the capital, Chennai recorded 6016 cases and deaths. In order to curb the spread of Covid, Chennai has mandated e-registration for movement within the city from 6 am to 10 am. Moreover, people who violate home quarantine rules will be charged a ₹2,000 fine.
Chennai Makes E-Pass Mandatory For Commute Within City
Greater Chennai Police has made it compulsory for people to obtain an e-pass to move between police station limits. This applies to the time duration of 6 am to 10 am, when restrictions are eased for citizens to purchase essentials. The new City Commissioner Shankar Jiwal, has divided Chennai into 12 districts and 348 sectors. According to The Indian Express report, there will be 13 vehicle checkpoints at the district borders areas. An additional 153 checkpoints will take care of important police limits and junctions. People from Chennai are not permitted to travel for any reason without e-registration, apart from medical and other emergencies. Infact, arrangements have also been made to help the public purchase vegetables, groceries and other essentials.

Home Quarantine Violators Must Pay ₹2000
Apart from making e-pass mandatory, Chennai has also introduced another strict Covid guideline. Covid positive patients under home isolation, who violate quarantine norms must pay a fine amounting to ₹2,000. Those who violate quarantine norms a second time before their recommended quarantine periods ends will be admitted to a COVID Care Centre. This rule applies to both Covid positive patients and their families who are under home isolation. Meanwhile, good samaritans in Chennai have united to help those in need. Transwomen provide free food to the needy and Chennai college students cook and distribute healthy food to Covid patients.
