Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagarswami, an actor and politician known by the name of Vijayakanth, passed away today in a hospital in Chennai. He was 71 years old and was a notable figure in the South. He also tested positive for COVID-19 earlier on. On Tuesday alone, 14 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Actor Vijayakanth Dies At 71 In Chennai Hospital

Vijayakanth, a prominent Tamil actor and politician, passed away today in a hospital in Chennai. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and succumbed to it on December 28, 2023. In addition to being featured in more than 150 movies, he was also the founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam or DMDK political party.

According to an article which was recently published by the Hindustan Times or HT, Vijayakanth, earlier, also tested positive for COVID-19. He was on ventilator support for quite some time and passed away today, despite best efforts to save him. Vijayakanth is also fondly referred to as “Captain.” This is because, in many movies, he has played characters who were military personnel.

Many people gave their condolences on his passing, including the Prime Minister of the Country, Narendra Modi. He shared a heartfelt post on his passing. Vijayakanth had been ill for the past four to five years and had taken to keeping a low profile. The leadership of his party is also now officially transferred to his wife.

14 New COVID-19 Cases Detected In The South Indian State

In other news, around 14 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. The number of cases reported on Monday was 11. It is important to note, however, that the total number of active cases in the South Indian state has gone down. Previously, there were 139 active cases. In the last 24 hours, the number has come down to 134.

According to an article which was recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, 72 of the 139 cases were from the capital city of Chennai. 11 were from Chengalpet, six were from Tiruvallur and three were from Kanchipuram. 17 districts in Tamil Nadu did not report any new cases while 14 districts reported active cases between one and three.

Six active cases were reported in Coimbatore and Krishnagiri each and five in Vellore and Tiruvarur each. Tamil Nadu officials also drew samples from 150 patients who complained of respiratory issues.
