Standing tall in the majestic city of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, the Jai Vilas Palace Museum is a portal to a bygone era of royal splendour. Maharaja Jayajirao Scindia of the Maratha Empire commissioned this architectural marvel, known as the Jai Vilas Mahal, in 1874.

A Fusion Of Architectural Brilliance

The Jai Vilas Palace Museum is a captivating example of European architectural influences seamlessly blending with Indian sensibilities. Designed by Lt. Col. Sir Michael Filose, the palace boasts a unique amalgamation of Italianate and Mughal styles.

The three storeys showcase a distinct progression. The first floor reflects the robust Tuscan order. The second floor embodies the Italian-Doric style, and the crowning glory lies in the Corinthian-inspired third floor.

Visitors step into the museum and are greeted by a treasure trove of artefacts that narrate the story of the Scindia dynasty. The grand Durbar Hall, the heart of the museum, takes centre stage. Ten elephants were used to test the roof’s strength before adorning the opulent space with intricately crafted gilt and gold furnishings, a colossal hand-woven carpet, and gigantic chandeliers.
