Backstory Of The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Museum

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial, located within the Moti Shah Mahal, was colonised by the British in the 1700s and served as a residence for renowned Indian poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore.

The Raj Bhavan, previously the official residence of the Governor of Gujarat post-independence, was renamed the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial in 1978, installed by then-CM Shri Babubhai Jasbhai Patel as a tribute to the renowned Indian politician.

Main Features Of The Museum

The museum features exhibitions in English, Hindi, and Gujarati, surrounded by a beautiful garden. It houses over a thousand memoirs and relics from the Indian National Movement, particularly Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s life. The museum also features the original Indian flag from the 1930s, designed by the Congress party.

Sardar Patel’s life is chronicled in the museum through artefacts, records, and photographs that highlight his contributions to India’s development, independence movement, and unification of India.

The museum has a special light and laser performance that combines laser projection, sound and light effects, 3D building mapping projection techniques, and a vocal narrative. It transports tourists back in time to India’s past, emphasising the Vedic age, the Mughal era, British rule, the fight for independence, and the establishment of a free India. The projection honours martyrs and freedom fighters.

Other Highlights Of The Museum

In addition to a fully furnished conference room for meetings that can hold up to 25 people at affordable prices, the venue offers an auditorium with central air conditioning that can seat over 1,000 people. The library and research centre house a vast collection of books and literature pertaining to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s life, contributions, and the Indian freedom struggle.

With views of the Sabarmati River, the food court in the basement serves tea, coffee, snacks, and meals. Moti Shahi Mahal is surrounded by the Mughal Garden, which has peacocks, monkeys, fountains, and a children’s park. It’s a fun experience for people of all ages. There is also a curio shop selling literature and souvenirs about Patel’s life, the freedom struggle, and souvenirs.

It takes 12 to 15 minutes to drive from the city centre to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial, which is 5 to 6 kilometres away. It is conveniently reachable by intra-state bus. Additionally, the memorial is 5 kilometres from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which is accessible by taxi in 10 minutes or by bus in 30 minutes. Additionally, the Ahmedabad Railway Station is only 5 to 6 kilometres away, making it a 13 to 15-minute drive or a half-hour bus ride.
