Doctors, for decades, have backed and recommended spending early mornings and late afternoons in the sun to soak in some Vitamin D. However, as per The New Indian Express report, the experts are now hesitant to recommend this. It mainly comes after seeing the rise in cases of Vitamin D deficiency and sun allergies in individuals in Bengaluru.

Orthopedics, dermatologists, and even oncologists have observed that due to the rising temperatures, cases of individuals with Vitamin D deficiency and sun allergies have significantly risen. This has prompted them to suggest spending only 5 to 10 minutes in the sun to soak in Vitamin D naturally. Earlier, it was recommended to spend 20 to 25 minutes for best results.

The report was backed by several experts who have given their two cents and some advice. As per Dr Avinash CK, an orthopedist, “Around 95% of the Bengalureans are deficient in Vitamin D.” He recommends spending 5 to 10 minutes in the sun before 8 AM or anytime between 3.30 PM to 5 PM. This is when the sun isn’t too harsh and heatwaves are not that bad.

According to another dermatologist, people with sun allergies usually face “rashes, irritation, pigmentation and polymorphic light eruption.” They recommend proper application of sunscreen and regular skin and vitamin level checks.

People, stock up on your sunscreens, eat Vitamin D-enriched foods, and stay safe!
