India witnessed a very historic moment on 21st July as Draupadi Murmu succeeded Ram Nath Kovind as the 15th President of India and became the first Tribal Woman President of India. After Pratibha Pati, she became the second Woman President of India . Draupadi Murmu was a BJP led NDA’s presidential candidate who marked her win against opposition’s candidate for presidential election, Yashwant Sinha in the recently concluded Presidential elections.

Draupadi Worked As A School Teacher

Draupadi Murmu won the Presidential elections on 21st July and Many congratulations posts flew in on Twitter including ones from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha. In the Indian state of Odisha’s Uparbeda village, Mayurbhanj district, Draupadi Murmu was born into a Santali tribal family. She worked as a school teacher previously before getting into state politics. She also has worked as Junior Assistant at the Irrigation Department in the Odisha government and Assistant Professor at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute. She later joined Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP).

Draupadi’s Political Journey By Far

In 1997, Draupadi Murmu joined Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) and later became Councillor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. She also became Chairperson of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 2000. In the BJP and BJD partnership in Odisha from 2000 to 2004, she held the positions of MoS with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transportation and then MoS for Fisheries and Animal Resources Development. The first female governor of Jharkhand and the first tribal leader from Odisha to be appointed as governor of an Indian state, Draupadi Murmu took the oath of office on May 18, 2015. Now in 2022, She is elected as the First Tribal Woman President of India.
