Dubai airports will ban plastics, starting 1 January 2020. The airports will ban paper receipts, plastic bags and all other single-use items from 2020.

    What’s It?

Starting 1 January 2020, you will not be able to spot plastic usage in Dubai airports. Well, going by DXB’s tweet both Dubai International (DXB), the world’s busiest airport and Dubai World Central are doing their bit for the welfare of the environment and are going plastic-free.

DXB has announced a ban on paper receipts, plastic bags and utensils from 1 January 2020. The effort comes after about 16 tonnes of plastic bottles and caps were collected and disposed from DXB.

And that’s not all! Earlier this month, Costa unveiled a huge art installation in the airport, marking World Environment Day. An artist made a huge sculpture of the Earth, using 60,000 unwanted plastic straws.

Eugene Barry, EVP of commercial at Dubai Airport, said: “At an airport that hosts some 90 million people per year, we believe we can make a tangible difference by eliminating single use plastics in consumer spaces”.

And the small initiative has already prevented distribution of over 150,000 straws in a single day.
