No Misleading Claims: FSSAI Issues Notices To Food Brands For “Natural Sugar” & “Organic” Tags

FSSAI, India’s food safety regulator, has now issued notices to several food brands for misleading brand names, product claims and labelling violations like “no added sugar”, “natural paneer”, “freshly made” and more. The food businesses have now been directed to take corrective measures.

FSSAI Issues Notices To Food Brands Over Misleading Claims

When you buy a juice, a packet of paneer or even chocolate, you might have read claims on the packs saying “no added sugar” or “freshly made”.  But it seems that these labels can sometimes be misleading, and to stop that, FSSAI has now taken strict action. According to its X account, it has issued notices to several food brands for violating provisions of the FSS Act, 2006.

The brands have been using misleading brand and trade names for businesses. Additionally, they are also under the scanner for false product claims, labelling violations and other consumer complaints. The brand Pluckk Mango Fruit Juice has been issued a notice for using “no added sugar” on its packaging. It is misleading as the ingredient list discloses 51% mango pulp and 49% sugarcane juice.

Several Food Businesses Under Scanner

Apart from Pluckk Mango Fruit Juice, Natural Paneer is violating the provision of the term ‘natural’ as it is a composite food. Similarly, MasterChow Foods Pvt. Ltd’s Ramen Noodles have also been issued a notice for advertising “high-quality organic flour” while the ingredient list mentions “premium quality white flour”.

Ferrero India Private Limited’s Kinder Joy was also questioned over claiming “rich in milk solids”. Its ingredient composition does not substantiate the impression that milk solids constitute a predominant proportion of the product. Food products like Gaur Healthy Food’s Silken Tofu, Raw Pressery Pvt. Ltd’s Alphonso Mango Fruit Drink and more were also issued notices for misleading claims. The brands have been directed to take corrective measures as well.
