Recent Archaeological Discoveries That Confounded Scientists

1. Evidence Of Highly Complex Society Discovered In Hungary’s Pannonian Basin

According to an article which was published by Vice, archaeologists have discovered evidence of a highly complex and vast society in the Pannonian Basin in Hungary. Initially, it was thought that the society was abandoned and collapsed around 1600 BCE. However, it is now being proposed that instead of being collapsed, residents spread far and wide. The society is said to be one of the major cultural hubs of the time and exerted influence across the Mediterranean continent.

2. Underwater Seamount Twice The Height Of Burj Khalifa Discovered

Scientists have recently discovered an underwater seamount which is twice the height of the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa! This seamount was discovered off the coast of Guatemala in Central America by researchers from the Schmidt Ocean Institute. Seamounts are usually formed by the remnants of extinct volcanoes. According to an article published by The Independent, the total height of the structure is measured to be 5,249 feet or 1,600 metres.

3. Stone Age Cemetery Near Arctic Circle Surprises Archaeologists

The Stone Age cemetery is known as Tainiaro and is located in the Finnish region of Lapland. It lies approximately 50 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The cemetery is said to date back to 6,500 years ago. As per recent findings, it is believed that at least 120 people were once buried here. If this is true, it flies in the face of what was erstwhile believed about the peripheral position of the Arctic Circle in Prehistory. It shows that there were once considerably large groups of hunter-gatherers in the region.

4. New Prehistoric Civilisation Discovered In Central Europe With Google Earth’s Help

According to an article which was recently published by Business Insider, researchers used Google Earth to discover a previously unknown civilisation in Central Europe. This discovery employed data from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 as well as historical imagery from Google Earth. They managed to map 100 new historic sites near the Tisza River. As such, the settlement is being referred to as the Tisza River Group.

5. Archaeologists In Peru Unearth Mummies Of Children

Recently, Archaeologists in Peru discovered four mummies of children. These mummies were found to be at least 1,000 years old. The place where the mummies were found, as per archaeologists, was considered a holy ceremonial site. According to an article which was recently published by Reuters, the remains were thought to belong to Ychsma culture. The article even said that the scalp of these mummies still had hair on it.
