According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express, the long-distance mail trains on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route will now ply at a speed of 160 kilometres per hour. This increase in speed limit will come into effect from March.

As of now, the speed limit of high-speed trains is 100 kmph from Mumbai Central to Borivali. From Borivali to Virar, the speed limit is 110 kmph. Beyond Virar, the speed limit would be 130 kmph. This increased speed limit will be applicable beyond Virar.

As per the Divisional Railway Manager or DRM Neeraj Verma cited in The Indian Express article, major works related to the speed increase have been completed.

This increase in speed will reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad by 30 minutes on average. The DRM also stated that at first, only premium trains operated at a speed of 160 kmph. These include Tejas Express, Shatabdi and Vande Bharat.

If the system is successful, other trains can also be allowed to ply at a higher speed limit. In order to enable trains to operate at a higher speed, railway officials have to strengthen the tracks, install crash barriers and upgrade the overhead electrical signals and wires.
