It was in the 1900s when India started looking for population control options. Being a developing country, and limited resources to nurture its citizens, this step was the need of time. In addition, there were programmes for male sterilisation as well. But despite numerous efforts, the Indian government was unable to control this growing population. But today, there is a possibility that India may have surpassed China in terms of population. Here is what the recent report from World Population Review tells us.
Population Of India & China
The recent report of an independent organisation, World Population Review, stated important estimation based on demographics and census. Firstly, India’s population is more than China’s by five million or more. Though India’s population growth has slowed down, it will continue to increase till 2050. China had imposed a strict one-child policy to control its increasing population. But, every decision comes with consequences. The one-child policy shook China’s balance of gender and age abruptly. Now, they are facing the problem of an ageing population.
Major Factors To Look For
Majority of the Indian population lives in rural areas and have more youngsters. This raises questions about declining job rates and stressful working hours. Many Indians are unemployed or working low-paid jobs. This leaves the Indian government in a fix. Secondly, poor working fares for female counterparts. Poor payments result in low participation. This is one of the biggest reasons why there are fewer females in the workforce. Whereas, in China, women comprise nearly forty four per cent of its workforce.
These are alarming signs that we all need to look out for. A growing population is a burden on the resources of the country. Also, gender inequality and less participation in the workforce will add fuel to this problem.
