Mostly we pre-plan our trips, from tickets to hotel reservations. But, sometimes last-minute unavoidable hurdles occur, and you might need to cancel your plan. In those cases what about the tickets, and hotel reservations? Tickets can be canceled but what about the reservations you made for your staycation? In many cases, you will be charged for canceling your hotel reservation. In some cases, you may have to pay the full hotel room rate also.

Is It Possible To Get Free Cancellation?

The hotels charge cancellation fees to recover their lost revenue. And even legally you cannot refuse to pay the cancellation fee. Refunds for non-refundable hotels might be challenging, especially if the reservation is prepaid. In extenuating circumstances, the hotel may be able to negotiate, but the hotel is not required to grant your waiver request. However, in some emergency situations, non-refundable hotels can also consider. Especially if you travel a lot, knowing if your hotel has a little leeway in their cancellation policy can make all the difference.

How To Ask For A Refund?

Most hotels have policies regarding cancellation fees for reservations. Some allow you to cancel up to 24 hours in advance without charging a fee to your account, while others are stricter in this regard. In fact, if you’ve booked through any travel sites. Travel sites have agreements with hotels to offer lower prices through the site. So check out the travel sites’ cancellation policies too. This might be one of the easiest ways of getting a refund.

If this method doesn’t work try another way for free cancelation.

  • It can be difficult to get the hotel to waive the cancellation fee, but if you are polite or have a valid reason, you may be able to do so.
  • Call the hotel where the original reservation was made.
  • Request a refund or waiver.
  • Explain the reason for the cancellation to the hotel’s manager.
  • If you do not waive cancellation fees, do ask them about rebooking.
  • If none of the above work, try negotiating for a lower rate.
