I Travelled Solo To Chhattisgarh And Here Are The Most Enchanting Places I Discovered!

Not a popular tourist destination, I found Chhattisgarh a treasure house of natural magnificence. The landlocked state in central India has a lot of diversity; it is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, waterfalls, temples, caves, museums, dams, and so much more. If you are willing to experience the raw side of nature, then Chhattisgarh can be your heaven. Its rusticity made me fall in love with it. And if you are a history buff, then you will be dazzled by the ancient temples and towns. Wildlife enthusiasts will find solace in national parks, biosphere reserves, tiger reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries. In short, there is something for everyone here!

During my Chhattisgarh trip, I gathered stacks of spellbinding moments. However, here I am highlighting some of the epic ones.

1.Chitrakote Waterfalls

Also known as the ‘Niagara Falls on India’, the splendor of this 100 feet high and about 1000 feet wide waterfall cannot be described in words. It is the widest waterfall in the country and also one of the most beautiful places I have been to. The rainbow over the falls and the dramatic sky above further enhanced the glory of Chitrakote Waterfalls. It was like poetry in motion. The falling water, the rising mist, and the sound of water took me to another world.

The best time to visit this fall is the rainy season (from July to October). At different times of the year, a maximum of seven and a minimum of three streams fall from Chitrakoot.

My tip: Without giving a second thought, stay at Dandami Luxury Resort here. It’s a huge property and the waterfall is located right near its exit gate. The waterfall will also be visible from your room and waking up to the sound of its gushing waters is going to be a wonderful experience.

2. Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary

If you are a nature enthusiast, then including Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary in your Chhattisgarh itinerary would be a good idea. It is a colorful place where you will see trees and plants in different shades. There are lakes with lotus flowers as well. Speaking of flora and fauna, the sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. I was able to spot several birds including cormorant, pond heron, little egret, peafowl, watercock, purple moorhen, red collared dove, rose-ringed parakeet, dusky eagle-owl, house swift, black drongo, common myna, Indian roller, grey junglefowl, little bee-eater, hoopoe, Indian grey hornbill, and grey wagtail.

There are several beautiful trees and plants such as peepal, mango, frangipani, yellow oleander, eucalyptus, neem, siris, African wattle, Gulmohar, Brazilian cassia, saaj, date, bamboo, etc.

3. Jatmai Mata Temple

Dedicated to Mata Jatmayi, this temple is located amidst the beautiful sights of a verdant forest. I went there to see the famous waterfall but liked the colorful temple as well. A huge tower and many small peaks are beautifully carved out of granite. Several murals depicting mythological characters on top of the main entrance look fascinating. The place has peaceful vibes and positivity.

4. Ghatarani Temple

Nearly 25 kilometers from Jatmai Temple, Ghatarani Temple is located and it also has a big waterfall. The best time to visit there is after the monsoon season when you can see the flowing waterfall near the temple at its best. You will see people taking a dip inside the water before entering the temple.

5. Marine Drive

When the word ‘Marine Drive’ pops up in our minds, we immediately think of Mumbai. But Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, also has a Marine drive that is the most happening spot here! Situated along with the periphery of the immensely beautiful Telibandha Lake, you can spend a quaint evening in the heart of the city. If your love for street food crosses all limits, then the food stalls here selling scrumptious items are sure to allure you. And yes, don’t forget to take a selfie in front of “Mor Raipur” for your travel album!

6. Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav 2021

Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000 and since then, November 1 is observed as Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav/Chhattisgarh State Formation Day/Chhattisgarh Day/State Foundation Day. It was a coincidence that I was in Raipur on this day this year and thus, I got to see a grand celebration. Different stalls were selling local handicrafts, street food, etc. The whole place was decorated as per the Chhattisgarh traditions and culture.

I never thought in my wildest dreams that I will be visiting Chhattisgarh as a travel destination. The state is an unexplored paradise and is definitely a surprise package as it is home to a rich history and cultural heritage, delightful natural marvels, as well as captivating tribal culture. Include it in your travel list if you want to take the road less-travelled and witness what not many people have.
