IIT Roorkee Bags FSSAI’s Eat Right Campus Award 2022

IIT Roorkee bagged the Eat Right Campus Award 2022 by India’s Food Safety Standards Authority (FSSAI). From August 21 to 23, 2022, FSSAI conducted a third-party audit for all the messes of the institute. As part of this rigorous quality audit, the institute has been accredited as a five-star ‘Eat Right Campus’ with a score of 90 out of 100.

The audits were conducted based on international standards and protocols assessing food preparation, food service, food quality, sustainability and cleanliness. FSSAI officials presented the five-star rating certificate to the Director, Prof. AK Chaturvedi. Later they congratulated him, in the presence of the Dean of Students Welfare, wardens, student representatives, and mess managers.

According to an India Today report, Prof. Barua later acknowledged the award and said, “It is a matter of great pride not only for the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee but for the entire city of Roorkee that our IIT has achieved a five-star rating.”

What Exactly Is The Eat Right Campus Initiative?

The Eat Right Campus Initiative aims to promote safe, healthy, and sustainable food in schools, universities, colleges, workplaces, hospitals and other campuses across the country. It aims to improve the health of the people and the planet and promote the social and economic development of the country. This also reduces the burden of medical costs in workplaces, institutions, and hospitals.

Food safety measures like steps to ensure a healthy, environment-friendly food supply and awareness to make the right food choices are the parameters on which FSSAI evaluates campus canteens and certifies them as “Eat Right Campus”.

They also include some mandatory procedures under schedule 4 of the Food Safety Standards Act 2006 like licensing, the registration of food service providers, and hygiene standards.
