One of India’s most beloved storytellers, Ruskin Bond, celebrated his 92nd birthday on May 19 with a heartwarming gathering alongside his young fans in Dehradun. Having spent much of his life in Dehradun and Mussoorie, the celebrated author felt it only fitting to mark the occasion in the city that has inspired so many of his stories. But more than the venue, it was the celebration’s simple, nostalgic charm that truly stood out.

The birthday festivities have been underway for over a week, with the author sharing glimpses on social media of cakes inspired by the covers of his books. In Dehradun, he cut a cheerful yellow pineapple cake themed around his latest title, All Time Favourite Friendship Stories.
As reported by NDTV, the celebration was organised by Book World Dehradun, Penguinsters, and Elloras Melting Moments bakery. Children from across the city were invited to join in the festivities, which featured pineapple cake, patties, and Frooti—a combination that hits nostalgia for all the 90s kids!

When He Ate 20 Aloo Tikkis In One Go!
Recovering from spinal surgery, Ruskin Bond was seen using a wheelchair at the event, but that did little to dampen his energy or sense of humour. In his inimitable style, the celebrated author entertained the audience with anecdotes and fond memories from his younger days in Dehradun.
According to Awaz The Voice, Bond reminisced about his love for Dehradun’s street food and recalled frequently visiting the famous chaat stalls near the Clock Tower. He spoke fondly about enjoying gol gappas, chaat, and aloo tikkis there, and hilariously revealed that he once held a record for eating 20 aloo tikkis in a single sitting.
