Pet Labrador Dies On Ludhiana-Pune Train; 3 Others Develop Fever, Owner Alleges Railway Lapses

A very disturbing incident has come to light. A pet Labrador reportedly died, and three others fell ill during a train journey from Ludhiana to Pune. The pet owner has now accused Indian Railways of major lapses in transporting his four Labrador Retrievers to Pune in April. Here’s what happened.

Pet Labrador Dies Due To Major Railway Lapses

According to The Times of India, a Ludhiana-based pet owner had travelled to Pune in April 2026 for his sister’s wedding. He had taken his four Labradors with him on the train. But unfortunately, one of the pet dogs died during the journey, and the other three fell critically ill. Pet owner Balbir Singh has now accused Indian Railways of lapses in transporting his four pet dogs to Pune.

Reportedly, the incident occurred on April 19, and the four Labradors were booked in the brake van of the Jhelum Express. The pet owner had approached railway officials in Ludhiana for guidance, but he was redirected to a private animal transporter. The authorities had assured him that the dogs would either be placed in separate cages or accommodated in a large enclosure.

Three Other Pets Develop High Fever

According to The Times of India, the authorities did not do what they had promised. They placed two large Labradors in a single cage, which was quite small. The compartment was reportedly highly unhygienic, too. Due to this alleged negligence, three dogs developed a high fever. And sadly, one pet dog died during the train journey near Jhansi.

The family got to know about the unfortunate incident when they checked on the animals during the journey. Balbir Singh also alleged that the railway staff did not inform them about the animal’s condition. Moreover, railway personnel allegedly insisted that the body of the pet be removed at Jhansi station, despite the family requesting to take it to Pune for final rites. The deceased dog was allegedly handled disrespectfully by the authorities. This is why the family had to get off at Jhansi and make their own arrangements.

Balbir Singh also approached animal rights activist and former Union minister Maneka Gandhi for help, who sought an inquiry into the incident. Reportedly, all four dogs were fit and healthy before the journey. However, one of them died while the other three developed fever due to trauma.

The incident happened on April 19. According to the pet owner, no satisfactory response has been received from the railway authorities so far. Manoj Kumar Singh, Public Relations Officer of North Central Railway’s Jhansi Division, shared with The Times of India that the animal’s body was handed over to the passenger at Jhansi as per procedure.
