A new section of the Ambala-Chandigarh Greenfield Expressway is expected to make road journeys between Haryana and Punjab more convenient. The 30-km Ambala-Mohali section, connecting the Ambala side with IT City Chowk in Mohali, is scheduled to open on December 15. The six-lane corridor is expected to save motorists around 40 to 50 minutes by allowing them to bypass congested stretches around Zirakpur and Dera Bassi. Want to know more? Read on!
New Expressway To Cut Delhi-Chandigarh Travel Time
According to reports by NDTV, the new road could benefit daily commuters, airport passengers and travellers heading from Delhi towards Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. By providing an alternative to busy urban routes, the highway is expected to improve connectivity around the Chandigarh-Mohali region. One of the major benefits of the Ambala-Mohali stretch is the option to avoid traffic-heavy sections of Zirakpur and Dera Bassi. Vehicles travelling between Ambala and Mohali will be able to use the six-lane corridor rather than relying entirely on existing roads through these busy areas.
The improvement could also benefit travellers heading towards the Mohali International Airport area, making road access more convenient for passengers. For those driving from Delhi towards Punjab, the new stretch may offer a smoother journey through the Tricity region, particularly during busy travel periods. The corridor could be useful for weekend travellers as well. From Mohali, motorists can continue towards the Kharar-Kurali bypass and Rupnagar, which connect to routes leading towards Kiratpur and parts of Himachal Pradesh.

The Corridor To Form Wider Connectivity
The Ambala-Mohali-Kurali corridor forms part of a wider highway network linking northern Indian destinations. Travellers heading towards Shimla and Manali can continue from the Ambala side towards Rupnagar and Kiratpur via the Kharar-Kurali bypass. The wider road network also provides connectivity towards Jammu and Srinagar via Pathankot. Motorists travelling into Punjab can access routes towards Amritsar and Jalandhar through the four-lane highway near Rupnagar, offering additional options for longer journeys.

The project also connects with the approximately 31-km Mohali IT City-Kurali Greenfield Expressway, which is already operational. Together, the two stretches are expected to strengthen road connectivity between Haryana and Punjab. Meanwhile, the Ambala-Shamli Expressway, which is under construction, is expected to add another link between Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, further expanding the regional highway network. The opening of the Ambala-Mohali section is expected to be an important step towards improving travel around Chandigarh, Mohali and neighbouring areas.
Good news for Delhi-Punjab commuters.
