Mumbai’s suburban travellers will soon get some extra space during their daily local train journeys. From July 20, Central Railway will transform 10 existing 12-car local train services to 15-car rakes, increasing passenger capacity on the busy Mumbai suburban network. Want to know more about it? Mumbai Central Railway To Add 15-Car Rakes

Confirming the development to The Indian Express, Central Railway‘s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Dr Swapnil Nila, stated that with the latest upgrade, the total number of 15-car local train services on the Central Railway network will increase from 22 to 32, while the overall number of suburban services will remain unchanged at 1,820.

The first 15-car services on the Central Railway’s Mumbai suburban network were launched on October 16, 2012, with 16 trains. Another six services were upgraded in March 2019, taking the total to 22. The addition of 10 more services marks another step towards easing traffic on some of the network’s busiest routes.

According to Central Railway, all the upgraded services will operate on the Main Line, mainly on the CSMT-Karjat South East corridor, assisting commuters travelling to and from Ambarnath, Badlapur and Karjat. By adding three extra coaches to each train, the carrying capacity of every upgraded service will increase by 25%.

Additional Trains Added To The Route

Among the upgraded down services (towards the suburbs) are the 9.15 am CSMT-Ambarnath local, the 12.26 pm CSMT-Kalyan local, the 3.03 pm CSMT-Badlapur local, the 6.21 pm CSMT-Karjat local, and the 11.08 pm CSMT-Ambarnath service, which operates as a slow train before switching to fast services.

The up services (towards CSMT) that will now run with 15-car rakes include the 7.51 am Ambarnath-CSMT local, the 11.03 am Ambarnath-CSMT service (operating as slow before turning fast), the 1.36 pm Kalyan-CSMT local, the 4.47 pm Badlapur-CSMT local, and the 8.38 pm Karjat-CSMT local.
