The Centre has updated travel and stay rules for foreign tourists visiting Rajasthan’s border regions, bringing numerous areas close to the India-Pakistan border under a safe area structure where special authorisation may be required. Want to know what it is all about? Read on!
Rajasthan Revises New Policies For Foreign Visitors
As per a report by Business Standard, the Union Home Ministry sent out a gazette notification on June 18 modifying the Immigration and Foreigners Order, 2025. The updated regulations extend to secured areas across Rajasthan’s border districts, like Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, Barmer, Phalodi and Jalore.
The decision arrives as the government amends the regulatory structure governing the movement of foreign nationals in critical border regions. The modification also officially includes Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders within the limits of the order by setting out the category.
What Are The Revised Rules For Visitors?
As per the reports, under the revised schedule, multiple tehsils and areas located near the India-Pakistan border have been marked as protected areas. Foreign nationals heading to or staying in these locations may need advance approval from authorities, based on the applicable rules.
The protected area system is targeted at controlling access to highly sensitive locations, especially those near international borders. However, the government has maintained many important urban centres and tourist-friendly destinations outside the restrictions. The notification further stated that the restricted areas will not apply to specific locations, including the city limits of Sri Ganganagar,
Suratgarh, Bikaner, Phalodi, Bap, Pokaran,
Jaisalmer, Barmer and Sanchore.
Border districts often have higher security requirements because of their proximity to neighbouring countries. The protected area structure allows officials to monitor and regulate foreign movement in locations that are strategically important.
For international visitors, including tourists, researchers and business travellers, the revised rules mean that travel plans that involve border regions may need closer review and advance permissions. At the same time, the waivers indicate an attempt to balance security standards with Rajasthan’s tourism interests, especially in areas such as Jaisalmer that draw a large number of domestic and international visitors.
