The Indian pet passport refers to the documents that you need to have of your pets while travelling across the border of India. Since there is no one official document, there isn’t any application process as such. It is important to note that while it is relatively easy to obtain a “pet passport” if you’re looking to import an animal to India, exporting might not be as easy.

This is owing to the varying requirements of different countries. The primary purpose of the pet passport is to determine the health status of your pet. It looks to confirm information regarding your pet’s vaccine status and other health details. Such documents are necessary for the clearance of your pets at customs.

Documents You Need: –

  • CITES Permit
  • Health Certificate
  • Microchips
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC)
  • Rabies Vaccination
  • Other Vaccinations like Bordetella, distemper, hepatitis, etc.

These documents are necessary if you are importing a pet. However, if you’re exporting a pet, the requirement of documents and the type of papers needed might vary depending on the destination you’re travelling to.

Researching the destination you’re travelling to and its policy on pets is crucial. You should also ensure that you pay a visit to the veterinarian before your travel. If your pet is newly vaccinated against rabies, you must wait at least 30 days before your pet enters India. An NOC from the Quarantine Officer at Animal Quarantine In India has to be obtained.

It can be obtained within five working days. The pet carrier also needs to meet the requirements. It cannot have wheels and must have a solid roof. It must be securely installed and should have two sections. The carrier should have holes on all four sides and must be locked securely in a way that cannot be opened from the inside. It must also have two stickers on top of it.

One should indicate that the cage contains a live animal while the other should indicate its top side. The cage should also have a bowl for food and water firmly attached to the cage.
